About Janell

Janell, a High Desert native, probably started singing before she ever learner to speak. Put a drop of her blood under a microscope and in it you’d see music. Her musical inspirations date as far back as the 70s and 80s, due in part to her mom Jana’s cover band. As the lead singer of Blind Date, Jana belted out the melodies of several lady rock legends such as Stevie Nicks, Alanis Morrissete, Pat …Benatar, and Anne Wilson of Heart. At twelve years old, Janell picked up the acoustic guitar that sat in Jana’s bedroom for years and taught herself to play. In school, she was always wherever the music was. The band room, stage, choir room, and even the football field. She had begun to learn to read music and play the clarinet and baritone saxophone. It was around this time that she decided to throw acting into the mix with performances in musicals like Into The Woods and Once On This Island. Her stage experience didn’t end there as she would later be cast in several shows including Annie, South Pacific, and Rent. In 2008, she graduated from Lancaster High School and moved to Riverside, Ca. to study music at Cal Baptist University. At CBU, she appreciated the quality and usefulness of the music education she was being offered, but never quite had the college experience she’d hoped for. No longer feeling a personal connection to the religious practices of the school and a general homesickness, she dropped out after only one semester and came home to the people and stages she loved. She chose to pursue music in her own way, without any school curriculum. Today, Janell writes and performs her own material. Drawing inspiration from singer-songwriters of the likes of Ingrid Michaelson and Sara Bareilles and using sincere life experiences as her ingredients, she creates melodies that force you to listen and feel. Even in the age of mobile-everything Janell says, “Sometimes I see people put their phones down and just listen to my music. It’s so cool.” She is always eager to grace any stage (kitchen, living room, or backseat for that matter) to share her gift. Janell is a musical experience not to be taken for granted as she and her guitar are undoubtedly destined for much bigger stages around the world. Even as a multitalented artist she keeps her goal simple: “To share stories and connect with people.”
